Un gruppo di giovani appartenenti all’organizzazione Climate Justice Now, contesta la Conferenza mondiale sul clima (Cop24 – https://unfccc.int/katowice ) che l’ON
U tiene a Katowice in Polonia (3-14 dicembre 2018); una loro rappresentante, Greta Thunberg (una ragazza svedese di 15 anni), viene ammessa a tenere un breve discorso al “high level segment” (sessione riservata ai capi di stato, ministri e delegati delle varie nazioni partecipanti). Greta è stata inserita dal Time nella lista dei 25 teenager più influenti del pianeta (http://time.com/5463721/most-influential-teens-2018/). Riportiamo qui di seguito il suo discorso in inglese con la traduzione sotto in italiano.
“My name is Greta Thunberg, I am 15 years old and I’m from Sweden. I speak on behalf of Climate Justice Now.
Many people say that Sweden is just a small country and it doesn’t matter what we do. But I’ve learnt that no one is too small to make a difference. And if a few children can get headlines all over the world just by not going to school – then imagine what we all could do together if we really wanted to.
But to do that we have to speak clearly. No matter how uncomfortable that may be. You only speak of green eternal economic growth because you are too scared of being unpopular. You only talk about moving forward with the same bad ideas that got us in to this mess. Even when the only sensible thing to do is to pull the emergency break.
You are not mature enough to tell it like it is. Even that burden you leave to your children. But I don’t care about being popular, I care about climate justice and the living planet.
Our civilisation is being sacrificed for the opportunity of a very small number of people to continue to make enormous amounts of money. Our biosphere is being sacrificed so that rich people in countries like mine can live in luxury. It is the sufferings of the many which pay for the luxuries of the few.
The year 2078 I will celebrate my 75th birthday. If I have children then maybe they will spend that day with me. Maybe they will ask about you.
Maybe they will ask why you didn’t do anything, while there still was time to act? You say you love your children above all else. And yet you are stealing their future.
Until you start focusing on what needs to be done rather than what is politically possible there’s no hope. We can not solve a crisis with
out treating it as a crisis. We need to keep the fossil fuels in the ground and we need to focus on equity. And if solutions within this system are so impossible to find than maybe we should change the system itself?
We have not come here to beg world leaders to care. You have ignored us in the past and you will ignore us again. You’ve run out of excuses and we’re running out of time. We’ve come here to let you know that change is coming whether you like it or not. The real power belongs to the people.”
“Mi chiamo Greta Thunberg. Ho 15 anni. E vengo dalla Svezia. Parlo a nome di Climate Justice Now. Molte persone dicono che la Svezia è solo un piccolo paese e non importa quello che facciamo. Ma ho imparato che non sei mai troppo piccolo per fare la differenza. Se alcuni ragazzi decidono di manifestare dopo la scuola, immaginate cosa potremmo fare tutti insieme se solo lo volessimo veramente.
Ma per fare ciò dobbiamo parlare chiaramente, non importa quanto questo possa risultare scomodo.
Parlate solo di una crescita economica eterna e sostenibile perché avete troppa paura di essere impopolari.
Parlate solo di andare avanti con le stesse cattive idee che ci hanno portato in questo casino, anche quando l’unica cosa sensata da fare è tirare il freno di emergenza.
Non siete abbastanza maturi per dire le cose come stanno. A noi ragazzini lasciate anche questo di peso. Ma a me non importa essere popolare. Mi interessa la giustizia climatica e salvare il pianeta.
La nostra civiltà viene sacrificata per l’opportunità ad un numero molto piccolo di persone di continuare a fare enormi somme di denaro.
La nostra biosfera viene sacrificata in modo che le persone ricche di paesi come il mio possano vivere nel lusso.
Sono le sofferenze dei molti che pagano per i lussi dei pochi.
Nel 2078 celebrerò il mio 75esimo compleanno. Se avrò figli, forse passeranno quel giorno con me. Forse mi chiederanno di voi. Forse chiederanno perché non avete fatto niente quando c’era ancora il tempo per agire.
Dite di amare i vostri figli più di ogni altra cosa, invece rubate il loro futuro proprio davanti ai loro occhi.
Finché non inizierete a concentrarvi su ciò che deve essere fatto piuttosto che su ciò che è politicamente possibile, non c’è speranza. Non possiamo risolvere una crisi senza trattarla come una crisi. Dobbiamo mantenere i combustibili fossili nel terreno e dobbiamo concentrarci sull’equità. E se le soluzioni all’interno del sistema sono così impossibili da trovare, forse dovremmo cambiare il sistema stesso.
Non siamo venuti qui per chiedere assistenza ai leader mondiali. Ci avete ignorato in passato e ci ignorerete di nuovo. Abbiamo finito le scuse e stiamo finendo il tempo.
Siamo venuti qui per farvi sapere che il cambiamento sta arrivando, che vi piaccia o no, il vero potere appartiene alle persone. Grazie”
